Lighting

Learn how to use Glossi's lighting tools to create professional product visualization with precise control over illumination. Great lighting is key to making your products look professional and appeal

Lighting in Glossi Studio combines the precision of professional photography with the flexibility of digital tools.

The system includes several types of lights, each serving a specific purpose in your scene.

  • The sunlight provides global illumination, affecting your entire scene uniformly from a single angle.

  • HDRI lighting uses image-based lighting to create realistic environmental illumination.

  • Physical lights - including light boxes, spotlights, and volumetric lights - give you precise control over specific areas of your scene.

    • When working with physical lights, you can adjust their intensity, size, distance, and orbit position. Each light can be targeted to specific areas of your model, similar to how camera targets work. A white dotted line (the light tracker) helps you visualize where each light is coming from, making it easier to achieve the perfect lighting setup.

Light Types

HDRI (Environment) Light

HDRI lighting creates global illumination that simulates real-world environments. It provides natural ambient light and reflections, particularly effective for products with reflective materials.

In Studio, we recreate this natural lighting using what's called an HDRI environment. An HDRI (High Dynamic Range Image) is a special type of 360° photograph that captures all the lighting information of a real environment. When you apply an HDRI in Studio, it's like placing your product inside that photographed space, letting it catch all the light and reflections from that environment.

Key controls:

  • Intensity: Adjusts overall brightness of the environment

  • Rotation: Changes the direction of the main light sources

  • HDRI selection: Different maps create different lighting environments

  • Tint: Color of the HDRI

Sunlight

While the HDRI provides overall illumination, the sun light acts as a powerful main light source that creates clear, sharp shadows. Think of it like having a spotlight that's very far away - so far that all its light rays are parallel, just like real sunlight.

The sun light is perfect for:

  • Creating strong directional shadows that define your product's shape

  • Simulating natural outdoor lighting

Key controls:

  • Intensity: Adjusts the brightness of the sun

  • Color: Changes the light temperature

  • Rotation: Repositions the sun to create different shadow patterns

  • Softness: Controls shadow edge definition

Physical Lights

While the HDRI and sun handle overall lighting, physical lights give you precise control for highlighting specific product features. These work like real studio lights, letting you perfect every detail of your shot.

When you select any light, you'll see a dotted line showing exactly where it's pointing in your scene. This helps you position lights accurately in 3D space. Think of it like seeing the beam of a real studio light.

There are three types of physical lights in Glossi Studio:

  • Light Box: Creates soft, even illumination like a photography softball

  • Spotlight: Produces focused beam of light for highlighting details

  • Bulb: Radiates light in all directions for ambient fill

Each physical light can be positioned, sized, and targeted precisely to create professional lighting setups.
