Using the Backplate

The Backplate System is an advanced backdrop feature in Glossi Studio that allows you to place products against custom background images while maintaining physically accurate shadows and reflections. This creates consistent, professional product imagery with precisely controlled backgrounds.

When to Use Backplate

The Backplate System is ideal for:

  • Creating consistent product imagery across large catalogs

  • Maintaining brand-standard backgrounds for all product visualization

  • Showcasing products with accurate shadows against custom backgrounds

Note: The Backplate System is only available when exporting from Photo Mode.

Selecting the Backplate

To activate the Backplate System:

  1. In Glossi Studio, navigate to the left-hand panel

  2. Click on "Scene" (this should be preselected by default) and locate the "Backdrop" section

  3. Click the "Select" button underneath the current backdrop title

  4. Choose "Backplate" from the available options

Configuring Backplate Settings

Once you've selected the Backplate backdrop, you can configure how it works with your product:

  1. With Backplate selected, you'll find a 'show wall' option, which enables an invisible wall surface to catch shadows from your product. You can use this to toggle between the two main environment options

    1. Show Wall: Enables an invisible wall surface to catch shadows from your product.

    2. Floor Only: Removes the wall so shadows cast only on the flat plane beneath the product.

Currently we only allow for a single backplate image, pre-loaded for workspace. Different backplate images may be available depending on your workspace setup

Tips for Working with Backplate Efficiently

Performance Considerations

The Backplate System is more computationally intensive than standard backdrops due to its advanced rendering techniques:

  • Initial loading may take longer when first activating Backplate mode

  • You'll notice exposure settings take a moment to adjust when loading a backplate scene

  • Real-time adjustments might have slight lag compared to simpler backdrop types

For optimal workflow:

  1. Complete initial setup (positioning, lighting, materials) using a simpler backdrop

  2. Switch to Backplate only after your basic setup is complete

  3. Make final adjustments and refinements in Backplate mode

  4. Create final renders with the Backplate system
