Import from Solidworks

This guide explains how to export your SolidWorks models for use in Glossi

Exporting from Solidworks

Welcome to the Importing Models from SolidWorks guide! This documentation will walk you through the process of exporting your 3D models from SolidWorks and importing them seamlessly into Glossi Studio. By following these steps, you'll ensure that your models retain all necessary material information and are optimized for the best visual quality and performance within the Glossi platform.

Export Directions

Option 1: STEP Format (For Multiple Materials)

STEP format preserves color information, which our platform uses to identify different material regions. Use this format when different parts of your model need different materials.

  1. Open your model in SolidWorks

  2. Go to File > Save As

  3. Select STEP AP214 (*.step) from the dropdown menu

  4. Click Options

  5. Ensure that Export colors and materials is selected

  6. Click OK

  7. Name your file and click Save

Option 2: STL Format (For Single Material)

STL is a widely used format for 3D printing and rendering. Use this when your entire model will use a single material.

  1. Open your model in SolidWorks

  2. Go to File > Save As

  3. Select STL (*.stl) from the dropdown menu

  4. Click Options

  5. Set resolution to Fine (recommended)

  6. Click OK

  7. Name your file and click Save

Material Assignment

Using Colors in SolidWorks

In SolidWorks, you can assign different colors to different bodies or parts:

  1. In the feature tree, right-click on a body or part

  2. Select Appearance > Color

  3. Choose the desired color

  4. Click OK

When exported as STEP, these colors will be recognized by our platform as different material regions. The format you should use depends on your model's material requirements:

Important Notes

  • Colors in SolidWorks translate to material assignment regions in our platform

  • You only need to apply colors if you need different materials for different parts

  • If your entire model will use the same material, no color assignment is necessary

  • STL format does not support color/material information - use STEP for multi-material models
